De adolescente, Renato Tirado es adoptado por Gustavo Rodr\u00edguez, otro importante hacendado azucarero de San Luis, tras rescatar a su hijo de un grupo de matones. Renato y Paloma se conocen en el recinto ferial de San Luis y sienten una innegable atracci\u00f3n mutua. Abrumada por sus sentimientos, Paloma apresura su regreso a casa con Porfirio, quien est\u00e1 muy enfermo. B\u00e1rbara, su hija de 25 a\u00f1os, tambi\u00e9n se ve obligada a regresar a la plantaci\u00f3n para estar cerca de su padre.
